Cavallls del Vent is the most famous hiking route in "el Berguedà" that connects eight mountain retreats from Cadí-Moixeró natural park and that allows us to enjoy and know all the park very well.
Here we describe the route in 5 stages:
At this early stage of the Cavalls del Vent, you can climb two of the most iconic peaks of the Cadí-Moixeró natural park: the summits of two neighboring massifs which are separated by the Jou pass, “Tosa” and “Padró dels Quatre Batlles”, so called because the municipalities of Baga, Alp, Das and Urús, all converge at the top of the mountain. The landscape is very varied, with lush pine forests lower down (especially around the “Rebost” and “Serrat de les Esposes” shelters), black pine and fir trees as altitude is gained, and extensive alpine meadows near the peaks. Much of the route runs along the Moixeró’s ridge, allowing panoramic views from the tops of the mountains of the Berguedà and Cerdanya to be enjoyed, as well as giving visitors the chance to observe the local wildlife, especially the chamois and magnificent birds of prey. The “Niu d'Àliga” shelter, located a few metres from the top of the Tosa -the ascent is optional- 2,513m above sea level, is the highest point of the trip.
The main attraction of this second stage of the Cavalls del Vent is the scenery as some of the most spectacular and typical panoramas of the Cadí-Moixeró natural park can be seen, along with the north face of the Serra del Cadí with the Comabon. Comabona being the most relevant summit during the descent to the refuge of Prat d'Aguiló, and the impressive reliefs of the Pedraforca massif, mount “Els Terrers” and Tancalaporta pass – the natural division between the Cadí and Moixeró from the ridge of the mountains of the Moixa and the Muga. This stretch of the so air and wild path is in harsh contrast to the thick forests where it runs the shelter of Serrat de les Esposes the hill of Vimboca, fresh atmosphere and gloomy, especially in the fir trees in the Black Forest, and the bucolic meadows fold Cortals and Aguiló. Moreover, the Pendís hill is a strategic crossing point, allowing shorten or divide accessing Sant Jordi refuge by the GR 107, along which the southern route.
Pedraforca, the most visited mountain in Cadí-Moixeró natural park, is the focus of the third day of our trip to Cavalls del Vent. Lowering the tailpiece of the Pedregosa mountain to the Gresolet refuge, magnificent views of the northern and eastern side contemplated flowing at their feet much of the journey. Visitors can once again enjoy the stark contrast as the landscape varies between the alpine environment of the grassy meadows and rocks of the Sierra de Els Cortils, at an altitude of over 2,400m, and the lush, shady, pine, spruce, and beech forests of Fosca and Moronta. The way between the Prat d'Aguiló and the Estasen shelters also follows the historic route of the Reapers/ Harvesters? along the PR C-124/ This in turn recreates part of the ancient route from Gósol to Bellver de Cerdanya, passing through the “Gosolans” to the Cadí where the villagers went in order to harvest fertile grain from the fields of the neighboring region. Two points of special interest along the route are the Tordera source, located a few metres to the east of the “Gosolans”, the highest point in the natural park (2,480 m), and the sanctuary of Gresolet with its eighteenth-century Romanesque building, situated near the refuge of the same name.
This stage encompasses two major areas of ecological value, both of which are the best conserved in the Cadí-Moixeró natural park, Firstly we have shady Gresolet, with its own microclimate more commonly found in Atlantic regions, to which can be attributed the abundance of deciduous forests containing beech, oak, and mountain ash trees., The landscape here is magnificently polychromatic in autumn, which is the best time of year to hike here. Our second point of interest is “els Empedrats”, a spectacular gorge between the “Cap de la Boixassa” and “Roca Tallada”, the valley formed by the “Forat” and “Pendís” streams which flow between splendid vegetation into the Bastareny river. Most of this walk is through the forest, as this is the stage of Cavalls del Vent that runs at a lower altitude (near the mill “el Forat”, Bastareny river, is the lowest point of the trek with 902 m). You can visit the small Romanesque church of Sant Martí del Puig, situated at the summit of the Bagà mountain, from where you can enjoy an excellent view of the mountains over Gisclareny, Puig Terrers, Moixeró, Roca Tallada, and the Bastareny valley. Both the Sant Jordi refuge and the Pendís pass can be strategic points for a shortcut on the second day.
To end the trip, we will visit the beautifully conserved extensive, verdant beech forests, found between the Sant Jordi refuge and the Escriu farmhouse, and from the Gréixer hill – also called “Clot d'en Pere” - up past the Millarès house to the Rebost refuge, finally arriving in the umbra of the “Gran”. Pastures, scattered farmhouses, and ancient terraces can still be seen here, with their traditional agriculture and livestock from the lowlands of the Cadí-Moixeró natural park roaming among them. This last trek follows the “Bons Homes” route (GR 107) from the Sant Jordi refuge to the Coll de Pal road. This is the historical route used by the Cathars in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries when, because of persecution from the French monarchy and the Spanish Inquisition, they were exiled from Occitania. The quiet village of Gréixer, with its single-nave Romaesque church of Sant Andreu which was consecrated in 871, is located in an area of great natural beauty, at the foot of Penyes Altes de Moixeró.
